My reference recordings

I think these sound amazing. You don’t need to like the music, just great lessons in engineering and production. Well, I mostly like them too.

  • Daft Punk – Random Access Memories. Phenomonally smooth, fat, balanced sound.
  • Robert Plant and Alison Krause – Raising Sand
  • Sam Phillips – Martinis and Bikinis
  • Smashing Pumkins – Siamese Dreams – most explosive drums ever recorded?
  • Kings of Leon – Only by the Night – sounds great pretty on much anything

Yes you’ll notice that two on that list are T-Bone Burnett productions. Take the hint.

Pretty good but not mind blowing

  • Sarah Blasko – As Day Follows Night (might make my top list if the vocals weren’t quite so loud)
  • Echo and the Bunneymen – Siberia, though maybe a little light in the bass for my taste

Interesting from a current squashed, everything but the kitchen sink, perspective

  • Arcade Fire – Suburbs
new songs released very occasionally - keep up with the play by signing up to my (spartan) newsletter.
